Bonded Wearing Course (BWC) is a high-performance, ultra-thin (5/8 inch to 3/4 inch) hot mix asphalt (HMA) overlay underlaid by a spray-applied layer of asphalt emulsion, or "tack coat." The tack coat is applied immediately ahead of the HMA mixture with spray paving equipment. BWC provides a new wearing surface that will prolong the life of the underlying pavement. BWC is highly beneficial on roads with moderate to high traffic volumes because it sets up quickly and can handle traffic within 15 minutes of placement, thereby reducing traffic disruption. The DPW anticipates employing BWC on collector and arterial roads with moderate to high traffic volumes and PCIs from 70 to 85. We expect to extend a pavement's life around 8 to 12 years with BWC.
