Permits for the installation of Fire Alarm or Oil Burner / Tank can be obtained between the hours of 8 am and 3 pm at:

Ensuring the proper paperwork is filed and upon completion of the installation of the Fire Alarm and Oil Burner / Tank, an appointment for an occupancy inspection can be made. Inspections are conducted Monday through Friday between 9:30 am and 4 pm (set time). Call 508-987-6012 or contact the Fire Prevention Officer. If emailing, leave the following: Name, phone number, and address of the property.

Prior to the inspection, ensure all detectors are properly functioning. Also, MGL Chap. 148 Section 59 and Town of Oxford By Law Chap. 32 require all structures have the street number permanently affixed to the structure. Residential numbering shall be no smaller than four inches. If the structure is not visible from the road, a post shall be placed at the end of the driveway with the numbers permanently affixed to three sides of the post. The inspector will not sign the occupancy permit without a number identifying the residence.

Re-inspections are subject to an additional fee.

The installer is required to be present during the inspection. If the structure has an operating kitchen with Ansul system, the Ansul system installer must also be present for the inspection (ensuring proper permits are filed). The owner of the commercial property shall obtain from this department a Knox Box application. The owner shall purchase the Box and install it in a location approved by the inspector. A Knox Box shall be installed/affixed to the building prior to the occupancy inspection.

Massachusetts General Law Chapter 148 Section 59 and Town of Oxford By Law Chapter 32 require all structures to have the street number permanently affixed to the structure. Commercial numbering shall be no smaller than ten inches. If the structure is not visible from the road, a post shall be placed at the end of the driveway with the numbers permanently affixed to three sides of the post. The inspector will not sign the occupancy permit without a number identifying the residence.

Residential Additions

An addition of a bedroom requires the structure to meet all current 527 CMR / 780 CMR codes. Currently, the addition of a bedroom requires the structure to have a hardwire smoke detector system installed in the structure. This will place a detector on every habitable living space (including the basement) and also in every bedroom of the home.
